Current Developements in the HDL
It is almost 10 years that we have been developing this project and we are more than ever active in the Humboldt Digital Library.
While our partners in the Kansas University are intensively working on bringing in a high quality of data including the illustrations of the plants, our technical team in Offenburg is engaged in improving the system and bringing interactive features to the project.
Last year we have finished inserting 4 (out of 5) volumes from the "Cosmos: A sketch of a physical description of the universe" and the work continues with the data entry of the last volume. While working on the data entry system, we implemented some Master Thesis' focussing on statistical data about the correctness of the information published in Digital Libraries. The scope of this research covers the scanning and a scientific evaluation of the correctness of the data entries in a Digital Library.
In another Thesis is dealing with extracting of all information from the measurement tables of Humboldt and bringing them into a searchable form.
Last but not least, we are opening our system to all the Digital Libraries by implementing protocols that will allow our library to be harvested by Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting as a basis for building value-added services. Our efforts will be directed to a live interaction with harvesting protocols for the scientific digital library networks.
